(Diego Suarez-Mountain
d’Ambre- Tsingy d’Ankarana)
|
Discover the rich history of the village and surroundings of Diego
Suarez, the uninhabited “Pain du Sucre” island, and the impressive Bays around
Diego Suarez.
You will visit the natural parks of Mountain d’Ambre and Ankarana.
A very rewarding trip for nature lovers: Lush forest of Mountain d’Ambre with
waterfalls and lakes. Tsingy
(limestone plateaus, decorated with fields of sharp pinnacles) and grottos
in Ankarana and all the way, lemurs, chameleons, snakes, birds…
On the road you visit the plantations, because the north is famous
for producing cacao, vanilla, and many different spices.
Day 1: Arrival and visit Diego Suarez
The guide will pick you up from the airport or your hotel. You will spend the day discovering the city of Diego Suarez. The colonial name stems from two Portuguese admirals, who arrived there in 1506. Diego has its share of aesthetically pleasing but faded and dilapidated old colonial buildings, shops and vibrant markets.
Just outside of Diego (8km) we will explore Montaigne des Francais, a popular mountain with rock-climbers. And visit three bays: Bay de Sakalava, Bay de Pigeons, Bay de Bay, while the guide will tell you all about Diego’s “Pirate” history. The white sand beach is lovely for swimming and snorkelling.
You will also see the beautiful “Pain du Sucre” (sugarloaf), a sacred 122 metre high, uninhabited, island that is situated in the bay of Diego Suarez.

of the massif include four crater lakes and three much-photographed waterfalls.
There are several trails fanning out from the picnic spot to choose from.
You can also opt for an extra evening walk to see the nocturnal species.

Day 3: Drive and visit Tsingy d’Ankarana
Today we will visit the famous Tsingy (limestone pinnacle) plateaus. They are probably the most unusual feature among Madagascar’s many extraordinary natural phenomena. It will take a 3 hour drive to get there. Besides the spectacular Tsingy there are caves and subterranean rivers with underground-dwelling Nile crocodiles, blind cave fish, eels and shrimps. The caves are frequented by an abundance of bats.
By day, crowned lemurs and northern ring-tailed mongooses are easily seen. After dusk, common tenrecs, striped civets, Fosa, noisy Ankarana sportive lemurs, mouse lemur and at least 13 species of bat become active. As is the case with many of Madagascar’s protected areas, the reptile and bird list is too long to prescribe.

(Antananarivo-Antsirabe-Tsiribihina river-Tsingy de Bemaraha- Morondava)
|
After discovering the Malagasy highlands, this adventure trip goes to the
West along the Tsiribihina river: The peace and quiet of the meandering river
is amazing, spot the birds and if lucky the lemurs, watch the herds of zebu
drinking and villagers busy at everyday chores, wave back to the children
running after the canoes along the banks.
Before nightfall you make your camp on the riverbank and enjoy the campfire,
a good meal and a sky full of stars.
Then a day drives to Bekopaka to visit the Tsingy (limestone pinnacle) plateau
of Bemaraha. Climbing, like a lemur, between the canyons and rocky steps.
Finally drive to Morondava while visiting Kirindy national park and the baobab
alley

Day 4, 5, 6: Tsiribihina river trip
We leave early in the morning after loading the canoe with our luggage, food and water. We begin our calm water river journey on the majestic Tsiribihina River, using traditional boats made out of one trunk of wood (pirogue). Those trees are endemic to Madagascar or the region. Nowadays pirogue builders are rare as more and more motorboats are coming up. The trip is slow and you can relax, but if you like some exercise you can help the boatmen peddle. Sit back and enjoy nature passing you by. The peace and quiet of the meandering river is amazing, spot the birds and if lucky the lemurs, watch the herds of zebu drinking and villagers busy at everyday chores, wave back to the children running after the canoes along the banks. Before nightfall we make our camp on the riverbank and enjoy the campfire, a good meal and a sky full of stars.
During the three days you will pass through diverse landscapes, isolated natural wilderness, reminding you how far away you are from home. At the end we pass the Gorge of Bemaraha with its steep rocks before we stop at Anosin' Ampela, a wonderful waterfall where we can refresh ourselves. We will see dense vegetation along the riverbanks, towering cliffs and baobab forests. Water birds, fruit bats and lemurs will accompany our journey.
We say goodbye to the boat men in Tsaraotana, where we will be transferred
by ox car to the nearby village.

There are cable robes, rocky steps, steel ladders and even a suspension bridge over one of the canyons.
You can also visit an underground world with caves and rivers and the majestic canyon of the Manambolo River.
Beside all these landscape features there are about 100 species of birds, most notable the critically endangered Madagascar fish eagle, 60 reptile species, 20 frog species and of course lemurs.
The dry forests of Bemaraha contain the white sifaka, red-fronted brown lemur
and the rare grey bamboo lemur as well as nocturnal woolly and mouse lemur.

Day 9: Drive to Morondava
After a rewarding visit of the Tsingy we descend towards the South. Crossing the Tsiribihina and continuing all the way to Morondava. You will arrive in Morondava in the evening. It is a long drive, but we will visit many things along the way. We will explore Kirindy national park, with a sheer abundance of baobabs and lemurs. This is the best site in which to look for the fosa, Madagascar’s largest carnivore.
Towards the evening we will visit the Baobab Amoreux, two entwined baobabs hugging each other, and the Baobab Avenue. We will enjoy the stunning sunset here, because the lowering sun casts beautiful shadows and colours on the baobab trees.
